Portus..
Seeing as today I skipped my 7.30 to 9.30 morning swimming session, cos yesterday I slept very late after my grandma's restaurant dinner treat, now I have an overdosage of free time on my hands. And what does Stanley do when there's free time? He mugs(yeah.. funny..) studies(isn't that the same thing?) gays(that's all the time!!) watches pr0n(hey!! not always ok..) blogs.
Yesterday it was really hard to clear things up with Weiren in msn so I'll clear it here before i do some quizzes. Note: I said clear and not contradict. Oh and I corrected the grammatical and spelling errors from the quote.
"words are defined by what someone chose them to be and others accepted, however this shows that people themselves can have their own definitions of words, because they either have their own word or define that word differently" - Weiren
Before I start I have must first have a rule system and language for this whole thing to be applied to. Which in this case seeing as we’re using English, let it be the English dictionary. Also acceptance and preference are very different.
Firstly, I agree with what he says. Yes words are defined by what someone chose them to be. For example, the word pen comes from the Latin word pinna, meaning feather. Now a feather was one of the first writing tools used by man, so pen has a rich history. AND this rich history has been accepted by everyone who uses English. True any random English speaking person may in their mind disagree with the word pen, perhaps they prefer glag to mean that plastic object used to make markings, however if they still use the word pen, then they have still accepted it, the word glag within their mind is still ONLY JUST a preference. Yes they can choose to define a word differently, that very person even can start to use it in his daily life, but at a cost, who would understand you?
But hey!! Wasn’t pinna also created? Yes!! It was, and you and I and every English speaking person may or may not prefer it but by using the word pen, you HAVE accepted it.
Perchance let’s say in an English exam you were given the question. What is the furry 4-legged animal said to be man's best friend? _ _ _
And I put lih, seeing as that means furry 4-legged animal said to be man's best friend to me. True it IS my definition, my preference and my word but would I get the question right? No I wouldn't, because everyone within that very examination room understands that this is an English exam and one must thus follow the English word system and choose the word dog. Your word, your preference and your definition is still ONLY your word, your preference and your definition. If you could cause everyone within that examination hall and everyone in the word who understood English to suddenly agree that dog should be abolished and replaced with lih. Yes!! The word dog would be replaced in the dictionary with the word lih.
Of course there will be disagreements, yes this shows that everyone can have their own definition and words but if everyone USED their own definitions and words won’t the world be very confusing? However if it is ONLY kept within their minds, nothing would go wrong seeing as once again it is merely a preference within our minds. Definitely there will be people who choose to say lih sucks, and refuse to use it even after it has entered the dictionary, that is why there are different languages, if one suddenly chose to abolish every language on the face of the planet except English, and it was a necessity to learn English. Yes!! The world would be come more orderly, seeing as everyone understood everyone. But people wouldn’t be satisfied. Perchance a large percentage, let’s say 40% ran of and created a new language, and started to use qez for dog and not lih, subsequently if they manage to convince 100% then the whole English word lih would change, however if the failed and ONLY the 40% accepted qez den in time that group would separate and create a new language.
Now I’m English educated and I prefer the English language even though I’m Chinese, but if I were to converse with my Chinese educated Grandma I have to suit her even though I still prefer English, not everyone can always have what they want. As for Hanisah’s life/song love/lyrics thing, if she kept it within her mind. Yes!! There’s no way I can access it so it doesn’t matter, however when it is publicized onto the internet accessible to anyone with an internet connection, I’m allowed to choose to disagree with it. And yes!! Hanisah can choose to disagree with my disagreement because I publicized it too. This time both our preferences have been let out of our mind, our preferences have been publicized, so by all means go ahead, you ARE free to disagree.
Which is the same with song, several people may want it mean JUST music, no lyrics but we have to be orderly. True the word song was created by a person, but that very person managed to convince every English speaking person then to accept it whether or not they prefer it, thus the word song is in the dictionary with that meaning. Several people may choose not to accept it but on an English blog naturally I’d assume you’d be following the English dictionary thus I was confused. Yes if you convinced me and a large percentage(the other percentage would in time use another language) of the English speaking community to accept your preference, your definition and your word, and it enters the dictionary then I’ll definitely accept it too. My preference, my word and my definition is still ONLY JUST my preference, my word and my definition.
Hey!! Who says we must follow the English dictionary? Well you and I and everyone speaking English, we created the English dictionary and it is up to us to change it. But even change isn’t easy, while you play a part in the English dictionary, so does everyone speaking English, no matter what, you are still JUST one person, and your preference shouldn’t be allowed to modify English words which are already accepted by the whole English speaking community.
In all, nice talking with you Weiren. Now to quizzes.
I made out with a gangster(female) because your mum said so.

2. Each blogger starts with 8 random facts/habits about themselves.
3. Bloggers that are tagged need to write on their blog about their 8 random facts/habits and post the rules. At the end of your blog, you need to choose 8 people to get tagged and list their names.
4. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your blog.
